At a certain moment in your life while thinking you come up with an idea. This idea is awesome and you decide to make that idea your goal. To accomplish your goal you think hard and come up with an action plan and start working on it. But after certain period of time you start facing difficulties and frequent discouragements. These negative things can come from both the internal and external world around you. In most of the cases people find it very difficult to move forward while facing all negativity and they give up. This happens due to lack of Self Discipline and commitment.

What is Self Discipline?

Self discipline is the ability to control one’s feelings and overcome one’s weaknesses; the ability to pursue what one thinks is right despite temptations to abandon it. Self-discipline and self-control give you power over your life. Discipline is a course of actions leading to certain goal or ideal. A disciplined person is one that has established a goal and is willing to achieve that goal at the expense of his or her individuality.

Each one of us have certain goals and dreams in their mind, and desire in heart. But as the time passes, people start getting demotivate. After a short time of motivation those goals and dreams start to fade. This happens because of lack of Self Discipline, and commitment. With the help of Self Discipline we get the potential to stay attached to our dreams and goals.

Discipline is the assertion of willpower over more base desires, and is usually understood to be synonymous with self control. Self-discipline is to some extent a substitute for motivation, when one uses reason to determine the best course of action that opposes one’s desires. Virtuous behavior is when one’s motivations are aligned with one’s reasoned aims: to do what one knows is best and to do it gladly. Content behavior, on the other hand, is when one does what one knows is best, but must do it by opposing one’s motivations. Moving from content to virtuous behavior requires training and some self-discipline.

In every part of life discipline is necessary. Our personal and social life requires so much discipline. If the discipline is not followed, then life will become disorderly. When we look up the history and mythology, then we find several examples where the discipline has achieved significant successes and accomplishments. These achievements became a great source of motivation for us.

Today, the scramble of life has increased most of us want to make more and more profit in very less time. We do not want to follow the path of discipline. But it is a harsh reality that success cannot be achieved without discipline. And Discipline can only be developed by following some rules for a long period of time.

How to develop Self Discipline

Below is a four step process which can help you develop Self Discipline.

1)Analysis
Analyze our daily activities and make a list of things you think are blocking your path towards success.

2)Elimination
Commit to your self not to repeat those thing which you think are not helpful to you. And replace those things or habits with positive things and habits, which will accelerate your growth.

3)Planning
After performing step 1 and 2 you will know your strength and weakness. Make a plan which you think will work for you. While making your action plan think about every possible way to improve it.

3)Practicing
Now after knowing want to do and how to do, start practicing your new daily routine enthusiastically.

4)Persistence
While trying to change your lifestyle you will face failure and discouragement, do not loose faith. Stay firm like a mountain, keep on following your plan until you reach your goal.

If the citizens of a country are disciplined then that country will continue on the path of sustained progress and will move forward in all areas. The lesson of discipline will always help us to move forward in our life and face the challenges of life.

  3. I agree with you 100%. It’s related to the ability to delay gratification which they’ve studied in children. The kids who can hold back from grabbing a cake because they’ve been told they’ll get two cakes if they wait, turn out to achieve more in later life. Makes sense to me.

  11. This is so true, especially for those of us who have a lot of responsibilities and interests. It’s easy to get sidetracked by life and all its distractions and obligations.

    It sometimes happens that when we are striving towards a goal, all of a sudden a lot of things will happen that throw obstacles up in our way. That’s when it’s most important to stick to our resolve and self-discipline to power through those times. It’s a challenge to balance all of the areas of our life, but it can be done with our determination and God’s help and guidance.

  14. I completely agree with you. As an author and a life coach I can say this is all true. In my life I have discovered that self discipline can be fun!. If you need to have self control find some way of doing it in a way you might like. I lost weight rapidly over a few months on a diet. I love the food and I have to eat a little but frequently. I wanted to lose weight in a way I liked, great!!
